Sanzhan North Creek – an easy river trek to a deep blue pool

The river trekking route starts in the forest before dipping into the river. The whole trip takes about 3~4 hours. Expect a lunch break and an overall relaxing day. The route is available to all fitness levels!

From Hualien drive straight towards Taroko National Park. Soon after Jingmei Railway Station, turn left towards Sanzhan Village. When you reach the bigger river, take a right turn and cross. After 200 meters turn left on a road going towards the mountains. Drive that road for 300 meters, and turn left again. Soon after that you’ll see a small house with a parking lot where you can park your car or bicycle. Remember to pay NT$100 for a car in the small box by the house.

River trekking has certain level of risk. There are occasional accidents in river trekking; risks that should be prepared for include the following:

⦁ Flash flooding poses a serious danger. Sudden changes in weather, like rainstorms, can cause rapid rises in the level and speed of the river water.

⦁ Visibility can be limited by rainy or misty weather. Avoid entering when it’s likely to rain.

⦁ Due to the humid environment inside river valleys, some rock surfaces might be wet, and some rocks may be loose despite appearing secure. To deal with wet climbing conditions, professional river-trekking shoes are strongly advised.
