Start by selecting a route that suits you and your fitness level. You can make the trip as many times as you want to and still experience something new. In summer, you can marvel at the green rice paddies. In early autumn, you can enjoy flowers blooming all around. The cycling trip from Hualien to Taitung covers it all and promises to be an unforgettable experience!

There are two parallel routes between Hualien and Taitung: provincial highways #9 and #11. Highway #9 travels through Hualien City then continues south through the East Rift Valley, which is a fertile plain lying between two mountain ranges that stretch between Hualien and Taitung. Highway #11 splits off from the #9 just south of Hualien City then follows the coastline. The two meet up again in Taitung City. You can choose whichever of these amazing cycling routes according to your own fitness level or do both of them if you’d prefer.

Highway #9

This is the best route for beginners, especially if you don’t have much confidence in long-distance cycling. Most of Highway #9 is pretty flat, and it will be easy to find food supplies, places to stay, bike repair shops, and train stations along the way. The views along this road are spectacular – mountains, rivers and farming communities all come together to create the perfect backdrop on which to ride. County Road #193 from Ruisui to Yuli is highly recommended since it’s a route with less traffic. You will get a chance to experience really authentic Taiwanese culture on this road. For example, you can visit beautiful Liyu Carp Lake, enjoy refreshing ice cream in the Hualien Sugar Factory, and take a dip in steaming hot springs. Check our “Attraction-East Rift Valley” page for more details about the attractions along the way!

Highway #11

If you prefer to see the ocean during your cycling trip, Highway #11 is the best choice for you. This route will require a large amount of physical strength, especially in the 10 km uphill stretch near Niushan. If you are not an avid cyclist, this route may be very challenging, but the struggle is worth it to get closer to the ocean scenery. There are also lots of scenic lookout spots along the Highway #11. The villages along Highway #11 are less populated, which means that there will be less access to food and accommodation available on the coastline. The first 7 Eleven is 50 km from the city center and the second one is about 100 km away. Carry a spare inner tube with you and know how to fix a flat tire since there are no bike shops along the way either. Check out “Attraction-Coastlines” page for more details about the attractions along the way!

Mountains and coastline combined route through Highway #30

If you can’t choose between the mountain valley of Highway #9 and the sea views of Highway #11, you could do both and cross the mountains on Highway #30. This route is most suitable for seasoned cyclists due to its somewhat challenging terrain through the mountains. Still, this might be a best route to choose for those who want to see lots of attractions along the way since it combines the beautiful East Rift Valley with incredible coastline. You should also consider riding through Yufu cycling path, which is built on the old railway that goes through the rice fields. Also, trek the famous Walami trail in Yushan National Park the following day if you are not tired from cycling. In our blog, we will give more details about this route!

When planning your trip, take the weather and climate into consideration. The season makes a big difference in Taiwan since summers are extremely hot and therefore are not really suitable for cycling. The best period for biking in Taiwan is from autumn to winter. The most favorable weather to cycle is from October to February.
There are plenty of service points along the way so not to worry. Police stations offer drinking water, coffee, toilets, and occasionally they will have an air pump as well.
Remember to take a detour through the nice and scenic bike paths along the way.
The strong wind in autumn and winter can make a big difference, too. It’s suggested to cycle southward from Hualien so that you don’t have to fight against the strong northeast monsoon. Check the direction of wind before you decide whether to cycle southward or northward.
You can find lots of food and supplies along the way. With small supermarkets every few kilometers, there is no need to haul along many supplies. 7- Elevens serve as places to get water, snacks, and to withdraw money from ATM's. Most of them also feature public toilets.
